E’ bello ritrovarsi alle prese con un registratore e la possibilità di intervistare Osmond Wright, in arte Mozez. Cantante jamaicano noto ai più per aver collaborato ai primi due album della band Zero 7 di Bristol ( fra i pionieri del trip hop degli anni ’90); senz’altro un artista che trovo fra i più interessanti e meritevoli degli ultimi dieci anni. Ed è successo sabato 28 novembre, presso il circolo culturale GratisClub di Senigallia gestito dai due direttori artistici Massimo Ronchini e Matteo Verdini, in un clima di totale disponibilità, poco prima del suo concerto.

I due direttori artistici dal palato musicale finissimo, investono nella certezza che la qualità anche se non subito ma prima o poi premia sempre e attualmente condividono con Mozez un progetto musicale. Matteo Verdini lo ha accompagnato sul palco insieme ad altri musicisti e al chitarrista e produttore Tony White.

Ho avuto il piacere di parlare con Mozez.

Quando e perché hai cominciato a scrivere canzoni?

Ho cominciato a scrivere canzoni quando avevo circa quindici anni. Non so spiegare il motivo per il quale ho iniziato.. è successo. Credo per la necessità di raccontare storie. Ero un ragazzino ribelle e avevo bisogno di dire qualcosa di diverso da ciò che mio padre stava dicendo in quel momento.

Dove trovi l’ispirazione per scrivere?

Il mio istinto naturale è quello di raccontare quello che vedo, la mia percezione delle cose. Ho trovato il modo di comprendere la mia verità, l’ispirazione che dà vita alle mie canzoni. Credo che la vera fonte della mia ispirazione sia questa ricerca interiore.

Nelle tue canzoni sembri guardare alla realtà delle cose senza che il tuo ego interferisca e prenda il sopravvento. E’ veramente così?

Posso solo dire che racconto storie in base alla percezione che ho di esse. Non sto dicendo che sia giusto, dico solo che lo faccio in base alla mia esperienza personale.
Ho sempre avuto l’esigenza di raccontare il mio punto di vista.

Ascoltando le tue canzoni si riesce a comprenderne quasi sempre il significato, anche da parte di chi parla una lingua diversa dalla tua. Di solito è così quando ci si esprime in un linguaggio universale che va al di là del tempo e delle barriere umane. Credi che questo sia un punto di partenza o di arrivo?

Bella domanda! Direi di arrivo. La nostra natura umana sta imparando cose sempre più grandi ma siamo ancora giovani dal punto di vista del nostro stesso processo creativo. Siamo esseri umani appunto, con dei limiti, e utilizziamo solo il dieci per cento delle nostre effettive capacità cerebrali. Se potessimo sfruttarle in pieno potremmo arrivare ad ottenere molto di più da noi stessi, riuscendo a percepire la realtà anche quando non espressamente espressa .

Cosa ha significato per te aver collaborato con gli Zero 7? Il loro sound ha influenzato la tua creatività?

Gli eventi accadono nella vita e non c’è una vera ragione. Accadono e basta. Gli Zero 7 rappresentano per me uno di questi eventi, arrivato al momento giusto e che mi ha dato la possibilità di poter lasciare un messaggio. E' stato un buon mezzo attraverso il quale il mio processo creativo ha avuto modo di esprimersi. Veniamo influenzati da tutte le nostre esperienze passate, per questo motivo direi che gli Zero 7 hanno influenzato la mia creatività.

Quale altro artista, se c’è, ti emoziona in modo particolare?

Senza dubbio Marvin Gaye.. Adoro la sua voce, mi emoziona molto.

Nella canzone “ This World” dici: “ Abbiamo perso la visione delle stelle che volevamo essere”.. Cosa intendi con esattezza?

Questa frase sta a significare che secondo me l’umanità fa parte di un disegno divino dal quale proveniamo e al quale torneremo tutti un giorno. Uno stato di pace e di felicità totale, di completa soddisfazione e di comprensione. Per me questo concetto riassume lo stato di perfezione, ed è assolutamente un messaggio di speranza. Bisognerebbe ricordare le nostre origini per poter credere in un mondo migliore.

Trovi interessante il concetto di remix di un brano? So che ne hai fatti alcuni in passato.

Il motivo per cui ho accettato di fare il remix di alcuni miei brani è che credo sia bello ascoltare come altri artisti interpretano le tue canzoni. Non impongo mai le mie idee, lascio loro tradurre le mie idee in libertà attraverso le loro interpretazioni. Questo mi piace.

Esiste un tema conduttore che lega il tuo primo album “So Still” al tuo secondo “The Absolute” ?

"So Still" è la mia esperienza del passato. " The Absolute" è la mia visione di quello che sarà, le mie speranze future ed ho cercato di rendere questo secondo album diverso, di facile ascolto e rivolto ad un pubblico più vasto rispetto ad un lavoro come "So Still" , che è stato più intimista ed introspettivo. Tuttavia il legame tra di loro esiste ed è proprio nel passaggio fra passato e futuro, che avviene comunque attraverso lo stesso processo artistico, perché di base, io sono lo stesso di sempre.

Vuoi parlare di questo nuovo progetto che stai facendo qui in Italia e della collaborazione con Massimo Ronchini e Matteo Verdini?

Ho lavorato per due anni con loro, ho scritto una serie di canzoni per il loro progetto.
Matteo è un ragazzo molto simpatico, trovo che il suo modo di essere unito al suo progetto artistico siano molto interessanti. Io sono una persona emotiva e se mi sento attratto da una qualcosa, la porto a termine a prescindere. Matteo è un sognatore, uno che crede in ciò che fa. Mi piace lavorare con lui.

I tuoi progetti futuri?

Ho lavorato molto negli ultimi due anni per il mio ultimo album. Ora mi concentro principalmente in concerti e tours. Sto lavorando affinché ciò accada, spero in un tour negli Stati Uniti all'inizio del prossimo anno e di girare con la mia band per i festival . Sto scrivendo e producendo progetti anche per altri artisti, ma principalmente ciò che farò per il prossimo anno è portare il mio ultimo lavoro in giro e farlo ascoltare.

INTERVIEW WITH MOZEZ - November 28th 2009, GratisClub - Senigallia

It 's nice to be struggling with a tape recorder and the chance to interview one of the most interesting and worthy artists of the last ten years. Doing it in a state of complete readiness - thanks to the young artistic directors of GratisClub of Senigallia - made the interview even more enjoyable. Massimo Ronchini and Matteo Verdini are also the managers of the cultural circle that Saturday, November 28th, opened the doors to the Jamaican singer Mozez, known to most for working in the first two albums of Zero 7, a band of Bristol (among pioneers of trip-hop of the 90s).

The two artistic directors - with a very fine musical palate - invested so much in the certainly that quality, though not right away but sooner or later always press.
Mozez shares with them a musical project and they also accompanied him on stage , together with other musicians and the guitarist and producer Tony White.

I had the pleasure to talk with Mozez before his concert.

When and why did you start writing songs?

I started to write songs when I was about fifteen. I can’t say the reason why I started, it just happened. I think It came from the need to tell stories.. I was a rebellious kid and I needed to say something different from what I thought my dad was saying at the time.

Where do you get inspiration to write?

My natural instinct is to tell what I see, my perception of things. I find my quest for understanding the truth, the inspiration that gives life to my songs. I think that’s the real source of my inspiration.

In your songs you seem to look at the reality of things without the ego to interfere and take over. Is It really so?

I can only say that I tell stories according to the perception I have of them. I’m not saying that I’m right, I’m just saying that this is my experience, how I believe it is. I have always felt the need to tell my own point of you.. my ideas of things basicly.

Listening to your songs you can almost always understand the meaning , even by those who speak a language different from yours. Usually this happens when a song is expressed in an universal language, that goes beyond time and human barriers. Do you think that this is a point of departure or arrival?

Very good question! I would say of arrival. Our human nature is learning things bigger and bigger but we are still young in terms of our own creative process. We are just human beings, with limits, and we use only ten percent of our actual capacity of the brain. If we could exploit it in full, we would get much more from ourselves, being able to perceive reality even when not explicitly expressed.

What meant for you the collaboration with Zero 7? Do you believe that their sound influenced your creativity or the way for you to hear music?

These events happen in life and there is no real reason. Just happen. Zero 7 represent for me one of these events that came at the right time, and that allowed me to be able to leave a message.. It was a good carriage for my thought process. We generate influences from all our experiences, so yes, Zero7 was an influence to my music.

Which artists influenced you?

Without a doubt Marvin Gaye. I think that his vocal has an intense and emotional characters, I adore his voice.

In your song This World you say: “We only lost the vision of the stars we meant to be”.. " What do you mean exactly?

This sentence means that I think humanity is part of a divine plan from which we come and to which all return one day. A state of peace and happiness, a place of satisfaction and understanding. For me, this concept summarizes the state of perfection, and is absolutely a message of hope. We should remember our origins in order to believe in a better world.

Do you think that the remix of a song could be an interesting step for an artist? I know about some of your remixes..

The reason why I agreed to do remixes of some of my songs is, I think, it's great to hear how other artist interpret your songs. I do not ever impose my ideas on a remix, it's totally the other artist ideas. I let them translate my ideas into freedom, through their interpretations. I like that.

There is a theme which links your first album "So Still" to your second "The Absolute"?

"So Still" is my experience of the past. "The Absolute" is my current vision and my future hopes. I tried to make this second album different, easy listening and addressing to a wider audience than a work like "So Still", which was more intimate and introspective. However, the link between them exists in the passage between past and future, which is derived through the same basic artistic process because I am the same as always.

Do you want to talk about this new project you're doing here in Italy and collaboration with Massimo Ronchini and Matteo Verdini?

I have worked for two years with the team, I wrote a series of songs for their project. Matteo is a very nice guy, I find that his way of being, united to his art project, are very interesting. I am an emotional person and if I feel attracted to something I do it regardless. Matteo is a dreamer, a believer. I love working with him.

What about your future projects? Your next tour?

I’ve been working very hard for the last two years on my new album, creating it and making it what it is. Now my concentration is on gigs and tours.
I am working with a number of people on making this a reality, I hope to tour the US early next year and do the rounds of festivals with my band. I have a few other projects writing and producing for, but primarily my work for next year is getting the new album heard.
